Heavy snowfall prompts cancellation of women's World Cup super-G race in Val di Fassa

MOENA, Italy (AP) — Heavy overnight snowfall prompted World Cup organizers to cancel a women’s super-G in Val di Fassa on Sunday — wiping out the entire weekend after Saturday’s race was also canceled.

“Due to the heavy overnight snowfall and the current slope conditions, the jury together with the LOC (local organizing committee) decided to cancel today’s women’s super-G race,” the International Ski Federation said.

Heavy snowfall on the La VolatA course also was behind the decision to cancel Saturday’s super-G.

Next up on the women’s schedule is a Scandinavian swing with downhill and super-G races in Kvitfjell, Norway, next weekend, followed by technical races in Åre, Sweden, the following weekend.

Mikaela Shiffrin, the most successful World Cup racer of all-time with 95 wins, is hoping to return for the races in Åre after crashing in a downhill in Cortina d’Ampezzo last month.

Shiffrin avoided major damage to her left knee but is dealing with an MCL sprain along with a sprain of the tibiofibular ligament. She also continues to recover from a bone bruise at the start of the season.

Shiffrin led the overall standings before her crash but has now dropped into second place, 205 points behind Lara Gut-Behrami.
