SEATTLE (AP) — Boston third baseman Rafael Devers was scratched from the starting lineup because of left shoulder soreness Friday night before the Red Sox’s 1-0 loss to the Seattle Mariners.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Devers felt some soreness early in the day and, after batting practice, felt stiffness. Cora held out Devers to be cautious, and said Devers is day to day.
“He didn’t feel great throughout the day,” Cora said. “Let’s be smart about it, it’s the second game of the season. He’ll come in tomorrow and hopefully he’s ready to go, and if that’s not the case we’ll wait one more day.”
Devers homered and doubled in Boston’s opening-day victory Thursday. Last season, he led the Red Sox in hits (157), homers (33) and RBIs (100).
Bobby Dalbec replaced Devers in the lineup. Dalbec did not play in Boston’s opening game and was 0 for 3 with two strikeouts Friday.
